A Breast Augmentation Alternative?

By Christine Tinselena

Currently, botox injections are used for treating many conditions, including medical illnesses that involve muscle spasticity as well as smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Every day, new applications are discovered; one such application is a breast lift, often called a 'boob job'.

In this article, we shall review this aspect of Botox treatment in brief.

Botox has emerged as a safe and effective treatment when it comes to managing fine lines and wrinkles on the face and tight muscles that can affect posture and mobility in patients who suffer from cerebral palsy or other spastic muscle disorders. It blocks the neuromuscular junction, thus altering the signals that reach the muscles through the nerves. The effects of this quick procedure (a few minutes) can last several months.

A Botox boob job refers to injection of botulinum toxin into the pectoralis minor muscle that is located behind the breast right over the chest wall. Shoulder movements and actions such as push-ups and lifting heavy objects off the chest involve the pectoralis minor muscle. It works in close conjunction with the pectoralis major muscle.

Once Botox is injected into the pectoralis minor muscle, it is relaxed and loses its tension. The theory is that this causes the normal muscles that counteract the pectoralis minor's effects (the rhomboid muscles) become overactive, and pull the shoulders back, giving a lift to the breasts.

It can be a difficult procedure to perform. Targeting the pectoralis minor muscle is hard because it is completely covered by a chunkier pectoralis major muscle. The benefit in offering a breast lift by blocking the function of such a small muscle is also questioned.

A botox boob job is not a breast enhancement surgery, and it only makes the woman's breasts appear larger.

For a period of 4 to 5 months the effects last. Women with a smaller cup size may have it done.

What does the procedure cost?

A botox boob job can take longer to perform and is a lot more expensive than facial treatments with botox. The cost of treatment can be anywhere up to $1500.

Risks of a Botox boob job

There are insufficient procedures that have been performed to assess the risk of a Botox boob job. Allergies to botox do take place although they are rare, and the side effects still exist. Finally, botox boob jobs have not had FDA approval either.

So, it seems that there is yet another use for botox. But other procedures that are performed using Botox injections may be more effective that the Botox boob job. The treatment is costly and lacks approval; or for just a minor breast lift.
