What To Know About The Washer Toss Game

By Lana Bray

The washer toss game, also known as washer pitching, is very similar to the game known as horseshoes. It includes two teams made up of two players who alternate turns throwing washers in the direction of the target box. To score points, one has to place a washer into the target box, the can that is inside it, or within 12 inches of it.

Points are issued in each round. The metal washers that are used typically have a diameter of approximately two inches. They are tossed toward a hole that is usually marked with a can or PVC pipe that is in a box. The target boxes come in different sizes and shapes. The typical size for one-hole pieces is 16x16x4 inches. These targets include a cylinder-shaped cup in the upper surface. Boxes are usually placed within 20 feet of one another.

The player must stand next to or behind a box while making tosses. Usually the throw is done underhand. Scoring is like horseshoes in that a team that throws second can invalidate the points earned by team one. One point is given for every non-rebutted piece within a box. Games typically go up to 21 points before a winner is chosen.

There are different ways to play this. Sometimes the distance of a throw, size of washers, number and size of holes, or box configuration are changed. The game may also involve a different setup, rules and name based on where it is being played.

The two things required for setup: boxes and washers. Two boxes are needed and usually include wood, pipe and carpet. Four brass or steel washers are used as game pieces. Small holes can be drilled in them to distinguish between team pieces.

Generally, boxes are to be placed 30 feet apart from the front of one box to the front of the other. They should be on ground that is level. It is preferably if they are faced in a way to avoid distraction of sunlight for players.

The objective with a throw is to get it near or inside the target box or its pipe. Players are allow to move forward while throwing, but one of their feet has to remain in back of a target box. One player on a team is given the change to through the pieces first and then the other team will follow. Some players throw washers together but this is not recommended because of low accuracy. The style of a throw will vary by player.

One team or player is able to score every round. Tosses that land a foot within the target, under it or next to it receive one point. Two points are given for throws that make it to a top edge of these boxes. Three points are earned when the piece lands in the box but not its pipe inside. Five points go to teams with throws that land inside the pipe.

Horseshoes and the washer toss game are very similar. Washer pitching is played between two teams that each have two players. However, there are a lot of variations when it comes to regulations and rules. To score, players must throw the washer inside the target box, within a foot of it, or inside the can that is in it it.
